In recent years, self-driving trips have become a favorite way for many to explore the world. As passionate self-driving travelers, we know both the fun and the challenges that come with it.
After countless trips to various destinations, we’ve gathered valuable experiences that can help make our journeys smoother and more enjoyable.
In this guide, we’ll share insights on car selection, essential equipment, and driving tips to help everyone prepare for their own adventures.

Choosing the Right Vehicle

For Complex Roads
Selecting the right car is crucial for self-driving trips. If our route includes rugged terrain or unpaved roads, an SUV or off-road vehicle is ideal. Their higher ground clearance and four-wheel-drive system give us confidence when navigating potholes, gravel, or uneven paths.
On a personal trip with an SUV, we encountered a road under construction, full of deep holes. While regular cars had to crawl through cautiously, our SUV passed smoothly. It really highlighted how important it is to pick a vehicle that suits the terrain.
For City & Family Trips
If our trips are mostly around cities or areas with good roads, sedans are a comfortable choice. Their lower chassis ensures stability on highways, and seats are usually cozier for long drives.
For family trips, MPVs are excellent. Spacious interiors, third-row seating, and large trunks allow us to carry strollers, luggage, and other large items easily. One friend’s family of five drove an MPV on a vacation. The children and elders could stretch or even nap in the back, making the journey much more comfortable.
In short, there’s no one-size-fits-all car. Our choice should match our itinerary and needs.

Essential Driving Gear

Safety Equipment
Safety gear is always the top priority. Our car always carries an emergency kit including tow ropes, jumper cables, flashlights, and first-aid supplies. These may seem unnecessary daily, but in emergencies, they can be lifesavers.
A car air pump is another must-have; once, a tire was punctured by a small nail, and the pump helped us drive safely to a repair shop.
Comfort Gear
Comfort items make long drives much easier. Memory foam lumbar supports can relieve back pain even after hours on the road. Neck pillows help us relax while driving, and passengers can rest without discomfort.
Small items like sunshades in summer or blankets in winter also make journeys noticeably cozier, enhancing the travel experience.
Practical Gear
Practical equipment like car fridges and portable power stations make trips more convenient. A cold drink or fresh fruit from the fridge is perfect during rest stops in hot weather.
A portable power station can charge electronics during camping, or even cook a meal for friends to enjoy together. Folding tables, chairs, and awnings make scenic spots perfect for rest and immersion in nature.

Long-Distance Driving Tips

Rest & Driving Rhythm
Long drives require proper pacing. We usually stop every two hours for 10 minutes to stretch, walk, or grab snacks. This prevents fatigue and keeps us alert behind the wheel.
Mountain Driving Precautions
Mountain roads need extra care. Shift down early on uphill stretches to maintain power. Don’t overuse brakes downhill—engine braking is safer. Slow down before curves and honk if visibility is low.
Rainy mountain roads are slippery, so maintain a safe distance and reduce speed.
Fuel-Saving Tips
Fuel can be a major cost. Keep speed steady, avoid sudden acceleration or braking, and drive smoothly uphill. When descending empty roads, we can glide in neutral—but always safely.
Avoid overloading the car since heavier weight increases fuel consumption. These small tricks add up, saving us a nice sum over a long trip.

Enjoy the Journey

Lykkers, self-driving trips are truly rewarding. From choosing the right vehicle, packing essential gear, to driving safely and efficiently, every detail matters.
The charm of self-driving is freedom—but this freedom comes from careful planning and preparation. We don’t need the most expensive or luxurious car; what matters is matching the vehicle and gear to our journey. By doing so, we ensure the trip is enjoyable, safe, and memorable.
