Hi, Friends! There is something so comforting about a homemade burger with a side of crisp fries, especially when you want that cozy diner feeling right at home.
This version brings together juicy burger patties, soft buns, fresh toppings, and oven fries that turn golden and crisp without making the process feel overwhelming. It is the kind of meal that feels fun to make and even better to share, and once you try it, it may become one of those go-to dinners you look forward to again and again.
For the fries, you will need 2 lb potatoes, 2 tbsp olive oil, and 3/4 tsp salt. For the burgers, you will need 1 lb ground chicken, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp black pepper, 1 garlic clove minced, and 1/2 onion finely grated. You will also need 4 hamburger buns, 4 cheese slices if you like, lettuce leaves, tomato slices, onion slices, pickle slices, ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise.

Make the fries

Cut the potatoes into fries of even thickness so they cook at the same pace. Place them on a tray, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with salt, and toss well so every piece gets lightly coated. Spread them out in a single layer so they roast rather than steam. Bake in a hot oven at 390°F until golden and crisp, turning them partway through so both sides color nicely. If your tray looks crowded, use two trays because that little bit of space makes a real difference in texture.

Prepare the patties

Place the ground chicken in a bowl with salt, black pepper, garlic, and grated onion. Mix gently with your hands just until combined. Try not to overwork the chicken because that can make the patties firm instead of tender. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into patties slightly wider than the buns, since they will shrink a little as they cook. Press a small dent into the center of each one to help them stay flatter in the pan.

Cook and assemble

Cook the patties in a hot skillet for a few minutes on the first side, then flip and cook the other side until nicely browned and cooked through. If you are adding cheese, place a slice on each patty near the end so it melts softly over the top. Lightly toast the buns cut side down in the pan or oven until warm and a little golden. Then build your burgers with sauces on the buns, followed by lettuce, the patty, tomato, onion, pickles, and the top bun.

Helpful notes and easy tips

If you want crisper fries, soak the cut potatoes in cold water first, then dry them very well before adding oil. Moisture is the main thing that keeps them from turning golden. For the patties, grated onion adds lovely moisture and flavor, while a gentle mix keeps the texture tender. You can swap lettuce and tomato for any toppings you enjoy, and you can leave out cheese if you want a simpler finish. Leftover fries are best reheated in the oven so they crisp up again, while cooked patties can be chilled and rewarmed gently the next day.

Serving ideas

This meal works beautifully for a relaxed lunch, an easy family dinner, or a casual get-together at home. Serve the burgers hot with the fries straight from the oven and set out extra sauces and toppings so everyone can make theirs just the way they like. If you want to stretch the meal a little more, a simple green salad on the side keeps everything feeling fresh and balanced.
Making burgers and fries at home is one of those small kitchen wins that feels especially satisfying. You get crisp fries, juicy patties, and all your favorite toppings in one cozy plate, without needing anything too complicated. If you are in the mood for a comforting homemade treat, this is such a lovely place to start, and it is even nicer when shared with people around your table.
